Abstract

The Islamic Education in Junior High School (SMP) plays a crucial role in shaping students' understanding of ethics, morals, and spirituality. Critical thinking is relevant in this context as it facilitates a profound understanding of religious teachings and the application of these values in everyday life. Implementing critical thinking in Islamic Education materials offers students opportunities to develop analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving skills in interpreting religious texts, applying religious values, and understanding the connection between religion and contemporary reality. This study utilizes the method of library research to explore the relevance and implementation of critical thinking in the context of teaching Islamic Education to Junior High School students. A comprehensive literature review highlights the significance of employing critical thinking in understanding religious teachings and the potential challenges, such as diverse interpretations, difficulty in separating personal beliefs, and societal expectations concerning religious education. The evaluation of teaching methods supporting critical thinking in the context of Islamic Education emphasizes alignment with learning objectives, effectiveness in stimulating questions and discussions, and the application of teachings in real-life contexts. However, challenges such as tradition, teacher readiness, and limitations in teaching resources can affect the effectiveness of this approach. To overcome these challenges, careful strategies are required to create a supportive learning environment that considers religious values while still encouraging the development of students' critical thinking skills. This research aims to contribute to the development of a holistic education that combines religious values with critical thinking skills, providing a strong foundation for Junior High School students to navigate the complexities of modern life.
